LEARN TO ROW AND NOVICES

Have you ever been curious about rowing? Now’s your chance to learn!  Portland Community Rowing (PCRA) will hold two Learn to Row sessions during the summer of 2025. In these programs we focus on sweep rowing, which is rowing with one oar. Rowing with two oars is called “sculling.” The Learn to Row program is open to anyone with no previous rowing experience or anyone who needs a refresher. We ask that you be 14 years or older.

Weather permitting, our Learn to Row program will consist of some dry land training where you’ll learn basic rowing terminology, parts of the boat and fundamentals of the rowing stroke. You will then get in a rowing shell with seven other people and a coxwain to row on the water.

Once you complete the Learn to Row program you can become a member of Portland Community Rowing and will be qualified to sign up for our full schedule offered throughout the summer.

Please note that our ability to row depends on the weather. If your coach or boat captain deems the weather conditions unsafe, we will not row.
